Slopers' Night Out ~ June 11th @ Lookout Hill

(I forgot my camera.
But if we'd eaten here during the day,
this is what it would have looked like.)

Well, I'm not sure about everyone else, but Lookout Hill has a special place in my heart. The smoked wings alone, with that blue cheese fondue...kill me now. So good. Of course, everything we ate was amazing, and the mac and cheese was particularly delightful. I have to say, while I know for a fact that no one south of the Mason-Dixon line is putting sea salt on their chocolate pudding, it was so good that I would happily lie and claim it as a standard Southern delicacy. Ridiculously good.

Small fly in the ointment - I completely forgot my camera. So I've snagged photos off the internet of the restaurant, and I vow to bring my camera tomorrow to our next SNO.

Highlights of the evening include:

-that chocolate pudding
-Adam's roommate Katie East and her friend (David?) joined us for the evening. There were lots of musicians at the table last week. I think we were a dominant force.
-Emily (last name?) is back from her trip to Israel and joined us with Sarah Gulley. I didn't get to hear trip details, so I need to sit by her next time.
-John Eicheley brought a friend and a helmet. I believe a scooter was involved.
-Jamie Bishop invited us all to go to his show the next night at Mercury Lounge in the LES on Thursday. I went with Katie (his girlfriend) and let me say, the Prigs kick ass. I believe that the first song was titled "Let's Play Sports". Apparently the Prigs also host a friendly soccer game weekly in Prospect Park. Talk to Jamie for details. The other Jamie.
-My friend Brian Boggess, who I've known since I was 8 years old, joined us for the after-drinking at Commonwealth. Those Moscow Mules slay me!

Lots and lots of fun was had. Hope to see you tomorrow!

(I'll remember my camera next time,
I swear!)

Slopers Night Out @ Perch ~ May 28th, 2008

on 5th Avenue and 5th Street
www.theperchcafe.com

Our night out at Perch was such fun. The Dark & Stormy was particularly potent, and the Raspberry Mule was perfect for a soldier with a ripe case of scurvy. Yay lemon juice! I had a great salad with green apples and cheddar cheese, and Aaron discovered the joys of panko bread crumbs. (We were there first, and pretty much in our cups by the time everyone else showed up, so I have no idea what anyone else ate.)

After Perch closed (last call's at 10:30 kiddies, so don't plan your late night here) we dispersed our separate ways. However, those of us dispersing southwards ended up at Commonwealth for a last drink that turned into several last rounds. I must say, the $5 Moscow Mule with the spicy ginger ale treated me right. Even the next morning. Though I did make sure to take vitamin B and drink lots of water.

Highlights of the evening were:
  • An ongoing inquiry into "Who exactly is buying houses/apartments in NYC?" (subtext: "...because it's certainly not us.")
  • Marat gave us an interesting theory on the function of the liver.
  • Jamie and Jamie discussed the eternal question, "How does one go about making money as a musician?"
  • Sarah told us about her possible relocation to Turkey as an ESL teacher.
  • Jose called Jamie (me) a Hub, which is so flattering. (see Malcolm Gladwell's The Tipping Point)
  • An increasingly profane discussion of mangina took place at Commonwealth. None of the parties in question will be able to give a clear account if pressed for details. Those wondering what mangina is...
Pictures of our evening and proof of our outrageous fun can be found here in my Slopers Night Out flickr stream.

May 21st - The Dram Shop

Our night out at The Dram Shop was great fun. The service was a bit spotty, but the bar was pretty busy so it made sense. The fried mac and cheese...wow. Where to even begin? It was fried. It was good. So good that I forgot to get a picture. Highlight of the night was probably the impromptu Connect 4 tournament. Many insults and injuries were traded over those little yellow plastic frames. The victors were not gracious. It was awesome! As Diane feared, I will be noting the most interesting conversations...that I had. You may of course add your own:
  • Katie and Jamie met because her brother was in a band with Jamie, who is a bassist (If i remember correctly. If not, correct me). They both had just finished a long term relationship and weren't looking for anything. Congrats to Katie and Jamie on the longest mutual rebound relationship ever! Two years and going strong.
  • Adam refused to believe that Robbie was not going to LSU, despite all evidence to the contrary. Also, he later asserted that he will stop speaking to her if she goes to Ole Miss, though the freeze-out will end in 2009 when he needs a futon to crash on for the LSU/Ole Miss game.
  • Diane and I remembered that I didn't mention the amazing tarot card reader from Florida that she spoke to on the phone many years ago. I think that the time for that story may have passed, but I had to mention it anyways.
  • Diane is the newest singer in our ever-growing band. Current members include: Adam, Jamie, Robbie, Diane, my friend Brian who doesn't know it yet, and a sad little xylophone that Robbie refuses to play because she thinks it's lame. I will be multitasking on the piano, vocals, and a triangle. Rawk. The working band name is Magnolina. This is still up for debate.
